This Skylight API Policy (“API Policy”) describes the principles used by The Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (“Ai2”) to determine whether Ai2 will make the Skylight API available to you, your organization and/or entity (collectively, “you”) for integration with a third-party platform or SaaS product (“Platform”). The Skylight API enables the display of certain content and information from Ai2’s Skylight™ platform and service through the Platform (collectively, “Skylight Content”). Capitalized terms not otherwise defined in this API Policy have the meanings assigned to them in the EULA.
The Skylight API is intended for organizations that share the wider mission and vision of Skylight. Ai2 reserves the right to refuse, revoke, suspend, or terminate your access or use of the Skylight API at any time. Ai2 may also modify, restrict or limit any features of the Skylight API or any Skylight Content in its sole discretion.
Your use of the Skylight API and Skylight Content are subject to and governed by the terms and conditions in the Skylight End User License Agreement (“EULA”). You must accept and agree to the EULA in order for Ai2 to grant you access to the Skylight API. This API Policy provides the express permission required under the EULA for the distribution of Skylight Content via an integrated Platform and sets forth the specific terms governing such use. If you are not a developer or provider of the Platform, the Platform entity must also accept and agree to the EULA or otherwise have a separate written agreement with Ai2 governing the use of the Skylight API and Skylight Content.
Ai2 may determine that a Platform is eligible for integration of the Skylight API if the following principles and requirements described in this API Policy are met. Ai2 may modify or update this API Policy at any time and will provide notice of any changes by updating the “last updated” date on this page.
Principles for Skylight API Eligibility
AI2 may determine that a Platform is eligible for integration of the Skylight API if the following principles are met:
- Mission. The Platform’s mission is to reduce IUU fishing, maritime crimes, and/or improve ocean health (“Purpose”).
- Intended Users. The Platform serves Platform users such as country government agencies, multilateral organizations, non-profit organizations, or academic institutions in furtherance of the Purpose.
- Access Requirements. The Platform must provide access to Skylight Content in accordance with the “Platform Integration” section of this Policy.
- Technical Requirements. The Platform must meet Ai2’s technical and security requirements for the Skylight API, and Platform personnel must have the capacity to do the integration work with minimal assistance from Ai2.
- Written Request. The Platform integration is either (a) requested directly by a Platform User, as memorialized in writing via a letter or email, or (b) is specified in the terms of a separate written agreement or MOU between Ai2 and the Platform User.
Platform Integration
- No Direct Fees for Skylight Content. Platforms are prohibited from charging Platform Users any fees specifically for access to or use of the Skylight Content. Further, Skylight Content must not be placed behind a paywall or within a premium service tier that requires a separate fee.
- No Additional Barriers. Platforms may not require Platform Users to agree to separate terms, execute any agreements, or take any other action that creates a direct contractual or access barrier between the Platform User and the Skylight Content. In no event may any Platform terms control, limit, or modify the terms of this API or the EULA.
- Ai2’s Discretion. Ai2 reserves the right to reject, revoke, or terminate access to the Skylight API at any time. This includes, but is not limited to, situations where: (a) a Platform’s business model, in Ai2’s sole discretion, effectively creates a barrier to accessing Skylight Content; or (b) a Platform serves use cases, customers, or end users that conflict with the Purpose, or that could be used for purposes detrimental or harmful to the Purpose.
- Fee-Based Integration. The Skylight API is not intended for commercial use, and Platforms may not implement a fee-based integration without Ai2’s prior written approval. Ai2 may, in its sole discretion, require a separate written agreement for any commercial use of the Skylight API.
- Notification Requirement. If a Platform intends to begin charging fees to its users after the Skylight API has been integrated on a non-commercial basis, you must notify Ai2 immediately using the email below.
Data Handling and Security
- API Key Security. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your API key. You are fully responsible for all activities that occur under your API key, and you agree to notify Ai2 immediately of any unauthorized use.
- Usage Reporting. As a condition of your use of the Skylight API, you agree to provide Ai2 with reports on the usage of Skylight Content within your Platform. Such reports shall be provided upon Ai2's reasonable request, the specifics of which Ai2 may define from time to time. This data is considered “Feedback” under the EULA and will be used by Ai2 solely to understand usage patterns and improve the Skylight Services.
- Data Deletion. Upon termination or revocation of your access to the Skylight API, you must immediately delete all Skylight Content from your Platform and any associated servers or databases.
- Trade & Export Control Laws. You are responsible for complying with applicable laws and regulations, including without limitation International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), end uses prohibited by applicable export and import controls, and any economic or trade sanctions or restrictions administered or enforced by the United States (including the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the U.S. Department of the Treasury (OFAC), the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Commerce), the United Nations, the European Union, or the United Kingdom.
